Christiane Karg

Gisela Schenker

Christiane Karg was born in Feuchtwangen, Bavaria. She studied singing at the Salzburg Mozarteum with Heiner Hopfner and Wolfgang Holzmair, where she was awarded the Lilli Lehmann Medal, and at the Music Conservatory in Verona. In 2009 she was named Young Performer of the Year by Opernwelt magazine, and the following year was awarded the prestigious Echo Klassik prize for her first Lied CD. She was a member of the International Opera Studio at the Hamburg State Opera before joining the ensemble of the Frankfurt Opera from 2008 to 2013.

In 2006 she made her auspicious debut at the Salzburg Festival, returning later to sing under the direction of Riccardo Muti and of Yannick Nezet-Seguin. She is a regular guest at the Theater an der Wien, the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, at the Komische Oper Berlin, and at the Opera de Lille. In 2010/11 she sang with Glyndebourne Touring Opera and in 2013 made her debut at the Glyndebourne Festival, where she will return in 2014. She recently made her role debut as Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier at Flanders Opera. She will also appear as Eurydice in Gluck’s Orfeo at the Wiener Festwochen.

In the concert hall, Christiane Karg has appeared with Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Concentus Musicus Wien, Daniel Harding and the Dresden Staatskapelle, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, Marek Janowski and the OSR, and Laurence Equilbey at the Salzburg Festival. She has also sung with Emmanuel Krivine in Paris, Josep Pons in Madrid, Paul McCreesh in London and Paris, Jonathan Cohen and Les Arts Florissants, and the Salzburg Easter Festival with Christian Thielemann and the Dresden Staatskapelle, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the Bayerischer Rundfunk and Mariss Jansons in Tokyo, the RSO Wien and Cornelius Meister at the Wiener Konzerthaus, and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and Jonathan Nott on tour in Spain.

In recital, she has appeared at the Wiener Musikverein and Konzerthaus, Wigmore Hall and Edinburgh Festival, among others.

This season includes her debuts with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra with Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester with David Afkham, the Czech Philharmonic with Manfred Honeck, and in the Salzburg Mozartwoche with Ivor Bolton.
