Emily Magee

American soprano Emily Magee has earned recognition as one of the most important new voices of our day.

She completed her musical training at the Indiana University where she studied with famed soprano Margaret Harshaw. A winner of several vocal awards she sprang to attention when while a member of the Lyric Opera Center for American Artists, she replaced an ailing colleague in several performances of Fiordiligi in Mozart's Così fan tutte in the Chicago Lyric Opera's 1994 season. She subsequently made her European debut in the same role at the Opéra National de Paris in 1996 and gained further international attention in the same year when she made her highly acclaimed German debut as Elsa in the Berlin State Opera production of Lohengrin with Daniel Barenboim. She was then invited to the Bayreuth Festival in 1997 as Eva in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in a production directed by Wolfgang Wagner and conducted by Barenboim.

Since these performances, Magee has made her first appearances at important theatres including the Teatro alla Scala di Milano, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Teatro Comunale in Florence, Covent Garden in London, the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Zurich Opera, among others, and has worked with conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly, Riccardo Muti, Bruno Bartoletti, Antonio Pappano, Daniele Gatti, Jeffrey Tate and Zubin Mehta.

In the 2008/9 season Emily Magee sang Marietta in Die Tote Stadt in San Francisco, and in 2010 she appeared new productions of Tosca (Dresden), Frau ohne Schatten (Tokyo), and Fanciulla del west (Zurich).

In the 2010/2011 season she sang Lohengrin in a Tokyo guest performance of Bayerische Staatsoper, she performed Tosca at the Semperoper Dresden and Arabella at the Frankfurt Opera.

Recent engagements include appearances ate the Zurich Opera, Semperoper Dresden, Frankfurt Opera, La Scala in Milan, Vienna State Opera, Salzburg Festival, Liceu in Barcelona, Metropolitan Opera New York, and Covent Garden. In the near future she is scheduled to appear in Amsterdam, Vienna, Zurich, and at the State Opera in Hamburg.
