Summer Tour 2009

The 2009 Summer Tour of the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER consisted of two parts:
Jonathan Nott conducted the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER in two demanding concert programmes that covered a broad repertoire of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, at twelve concerts, including appearances at the Lucerne Festival, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and the BBC Proms.

In the second part of the tour under Franz Welser-Möst, the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER performed in Linz, Vienna, and – for the first time – the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. The programmes included works by Sibelius, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky.

Conductors

British conductor Jonathan Nott led the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGEND-ORCHESTER for the first time. The former chief conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and the Ensemble Intercontemporain has been chief conductor of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra since 2000.

Franz Welser-Möst is, next to Claudio Abbado, probably the conductor with the closest connection to the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGEND-ORCHESTER and has been a regular guest from its earliest days. Franz Welser-Möst is Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra and – beginning with the 2010/11 season – General Music Director of the Vienna State Opera.

Soloists

The outstanding German baritone Matthias Goerne sang Gustav Mahler's Kindertotenlieder as well as Richard Wagner's Wesendonck-Lieder in the orchestral version by Hans Werner Henze with Jonathan Nott conducting. This was his second appearance with the GMJO since 2005.

The young Georgian Lisa Batiashvili, one of the leading violinists of our time, was the soloist for Sergei Prokofiev's First Violin Concerto, conducted by Franz Welser-Möst.
