Lisa Batiashvili

Mat Hennek

Few young soloists command the degree of warmth and respect from fellow musicians all over the world as does violinist Lisa Batiashvili; and it is a significant reflection of the esteem in which she is held that she is featured in consecutive season brochures as soloist with many of the world's greatest orchestras. These include in the US the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic; in Europe the Berlin Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra and BBC Symphony, also the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, NDR Hamburg and Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, plus invitations from Dresden Staatskapelle, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Tonhalle Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe and Bayerischer Rundfunk; and further afield from orchestras such as the NHK Symphony Orchestra and Sydney Symphony.

Chamber music has always played an important part in Lisa's schedule, with invitations from festivals such as Edinburgh, Aldeburgh, Marlboro, Tanglewood, Saratoga, Schleswig Holstein, Schubertiade and Kuhmo.

Meanwhile, Lisa's commitment to new music has been evidenced by three world premieres in recent seasons including Magnus Lindberg's Violin Concerto which she later recorded for SonyBMG together with the Sibelius Violin Concerto. Since 1995 Lisa's career has been marked by a number of landmark events: in that year, as the youngest ever competitor aged 16, she was awarded second prize in the Sibelius Competition in Helsinki. In 2001, as one of the first BBC ‘New Generation Artists’, BBC Music Magazine referred to her "outstanding debut of the year" at the BBC Proms. In 2003 she was named winner of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival's Leonard Bernstein Award and was later awarded the Beethoven Ring Prize from the Beethoven Festival Bonn. In 2008 Lisa received the Choc de l'année for her debut album with Sony Classical. Now in her mid-20s, she continues to make an indelible impression on the international music scene, with stunning successes throughout Europe, North America, Australia and the Pacific Rim territories.

Munich has been Lisa's home city since 1994: she resides there with her husband and two children and it is where she has primarily studied with Professor Ana Chumachenko at the city's Musikhochschule, having previously worked with Professor Mark Lubotski at the Musikhochschule in Hamburg. Lisa plays the 1709 Engleman Stradivarius – kindly loaned by the Nippon Music Foundation; and records exclusively for SonyBMG.
